Rosca de reyes pricing: how much to charge for each size

To price a rosca de reyes, add up what one costs you to make (ingredients, the box and the babies, your hours and a share of kitchen costs), add your markup, then check the number against local panaderías. In this guide’s example, a 1 kg (2.2 lb) rosca comes to about $53. Sell by weight, open orders in mid-December and close them by January 3 or 4.

Key takeaways
  • Quote by weight: 500 g, 1 kg or 2 kg. “Small”, “medium” and “large” mean different things at every bakery.
  • A 1 kg rosca serves about 10 to 12 people.
  • Take a deposit when you confirm, and offer fixed pickup times on January 5 and 6.

Example prices by size

500 g rosca (about 1 lb)$385 to 6 servings
1 kg rosca (about 2.2 lb)$5310 to 12 servings
2 kg rosca (about 4.4 lb)$8820 to 24 servings

Rosca sizes: weight and servings

Bakeries name their sizes differently. One chain’s “medium” weighs 500 g and another’s “small” weighs the same, so put grams (or pounds) and servings on your menu. Customers understand “1 kg, serves 10 to 12” without asking.

Servings assume a slice of about 80 to 100 g (3 to 3.5 oz), the same rule as the cake serving chart by weight. In Mexico, Soriana sells its large traditional rosca for 10 to 12 people.

WeightServingsWhat Mexican chains call it
500 to 550 g (about 1 lb)5 to 6Small at Sanborns, medium at Walmart
1 to 1.1 kg (about 2.2 lb)10 to 12Large at Walmart, family size at Sanborns
2 kg (about 4.4 lb)20 to 24Giant at Sanborns; Costco’s rosca is 2 kg

What it costs to make one

Start from your cost, not from someone else’s price. A rosca takes flour, butter, eggs, sugar, yeast, milk and orange zest, plus the ate (fruit paste), figs, cherries or candied fruit on top. Then come the plastic babies, the box or bag and the label, which belong in the price as much as the dough does.

Use this month’s prices. In Mexico, GCMA and Profeco estimated that baking a rosca cost 10.8% more in January 2026 than a year earlier: yeast up 33%, ate and eggs up about 20%, flour up 10%, butter flat and sugar down 15%.

Your hours count too. Kneading, shaping, decorating, baking and packing a batch takes real time even while the dough rises on its own. Split the batch’s hours across the roscas it makes.

Cost lineBatch of 4Per rosca
Ingredients (dough and topping)$40$10
Box, babies and label$12$3
Hours at $20 (5 hours of work)$100$25
Overhead (10%)$15.20$3.80
Cost$167.20$41.80
Price with a 25% markup$209$53 (rounded up)

Rosca de reyes price by size

The same math for all three weights. A small rosca doesn’t cost half as much as a large one, because shaping, decorating and packing barely change with size. That’s why a 500 g rosca costs more per serving than a 2 kg one.

These are example numbers. Enter your own ingredients, packaging and hours in the bakery pricing calculator to build your own price list.

RoscaIngredientsPackagingHoursPricePer serving
500 g (5 to 6 servings)$5$21 h$38about $7

2 kg (20 to 24 servings)$20$42 h$88about $4

Check your price against local bakeries

There’s no US survey of rosca prices, so check two or three panaderías near you before you post the menu. Mexico has one: Profeco’s January 2026 survey of Mexico City found small roscas from MX$70 to MX$265, medium from MX$130 to MX$610 and large from MX$230 to MX$900. The ranges are wide because they mix neighbourhood bakeries, supermarkets and premium pastry shops.

  • If your number comes in under the supermarket, check your costs before you lower it. The box, the babies or your hours are usually missing.
  • Don’t compete with the supermarket on price. Compete on what it can’t offer: a homemade rosca, baked the day of pickup, decorated the way you choose.
  • If you charge more than a bakery, say why: real butter, good fruit, a cream filling or hand decoration.

Take orders before January 6

The rosca is cut on January 6, Día de Reyes (Three Kings Day), and most of them are ordered in the last week. Sort out the dates before you open orders:

  1. Open orders in mid-December, after or alongside your Christmas menu.
  2. Set a cutoff, such as January 3, and a cap on roscas per bake day.
  3. Take a deposit when you confirm. The cake deposit policy has wording you can copy.
  4. Offer fixed pickup times on January 5 and 6, so you aren’t delivering door to door all day.
  5. Put the tradition on the menu: whoever finds the baby hosts the tamales on February 2, Día de la Candelaria.

Lines to sell your roscas

Swap in your own dates and area. For more seasonal lines, see the Christmas bakery slogans.

  • Rosca de reyes by preorder. Who will find the baby?
  • Rosca orders are open. Reserve yours by [date].
  • Homemade rosca, baked the day you pick it up.
  • 500 g, 1 kg or 2 kg: a rosca for every table.
  • Traditional or cream-filled: choose yours.
  • Pickup January 5 and 6, [time] to [time].
  • Limited roscas. When the oven is full, orders close.
  • Find the baby, host the tamales.
How much should I charge for a rosca de reyes?

Work out your cost (ingredients, box, babies, hours and overhead) and add your markup. In this guide’s example, a 1 kg (2.2 lb) rosca comes to about $53, a 500 g rosca to $38 and a 2 kg rosca to $88. Check the number against two or three local panaderías before you post it.

How many people does a rosca de reyes serve?

A 500 g rosca serves about 5 or 6, a 1 kg rosca 10 to 12 and a 2 kg rosca 20 to 24, with slices of 80 to 100 g.

Should I sell roscas by weight or by size?

By size, with the weight written next to it. Customers choose faster between three fixed options, and the weight stops them comparing your “large” with another bakery’s large that weighs half as much.

When should I open rosca de reyes orders?

In mid-December, with a cutoff on January 3 or 4 and pickup on January 5 and 6. Cap the roscas per bake day so you don’t overcommit.
